Why do some emails bounce?

Some emails may bounce, but don't panic there is always an explanation 😉
Several elements can come into play. You need to take the time to analyze the kind of bounce you have and what are your practices.

Identify the kind of bounce

There are two main kinds of bounces: the hard bounce and the reject or refuse bounce
  • The hard bounce: is when the email address is invalid. Either a typo in the email address or the contact has left the company, or the email address is false. You must therefore delete the email address from your sendings. 
  • The reject/refuse bounce: is when the mail server identifies your email as an unsolicited email. More and more companies have set up automatic safeguards to better filter unsolicited emails. By following the next steps, you can avoid this.

Adopt good sending practices

You should not use mass emailing tools for your prospecting.
Automated mass mailings damage your domain reputation, and increase your bounce rate. Prefer cold email campaigns, i.e. sending emails in small quantities: 150 to 200 emails max. per day while keeping a human behavior.

The "catch-all" email

The domain @company.com exists, but then it is impossible to know if first.last@company.com or last@company.com exist or not. So there can be more bounce on this type of email address.
💡30% of companies have catch-all domains, especially groups like IBM. We still recommend including them in your cold email campaigns, just don't shoot them in too much quantity.

Set up your custom domain

When you use a cold email solution you share the domain reputation with other users who may not have the best practices.
Remember to set up your custom domain. It is your identity card, it is what certifies to the recipient that you are the sender and not just another user of the cold email solution.

Set up your domain name

Many companies, especially the big ones, put reinforced security and do not accept receiving emails from badly configured domains. Indeed, if you have not set up your domain properly, your message could bounce even if the email address is valid. 
The setting of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC of your domain is what certifies to the different mail servers that you are the sender of the email and that it has not been intercepted by a third party. It's a bit like a visa, if it's not valid, you'll be refused upon arrival 😉
